Clarence St Cyclery

A Cycling Legacy

Clarence Street Cyclery, a cornerstone of Australian cycling since 1975, was more than a bike shop; it was a landmark. Reimagined for the modern rider while honouring its legacy, it balanced heritage with innovation. Every detail reflected a deep respect for cycling culture and a lasting commitment to the community that shaped it.

Opportunity

The project began with a clear goal: to refresh the retail space at Clarence Street Cyclery while respecting its architectural and cultural significance. What started as a seasonal update quickly uncovered opportunities to reveal and restore original heritage elements hidden beneath years of fit-outs.

The removal of the suspended ceiling exposed timber joists, cast iron columns, and brickwork that speak to the building’s Victorian warehouse origins. With guidance from Council, the design team embraced these discoveries, treating them not as limitations but as features to be celebrated.

This was more than a cosmetic upgrade. It was a chance to reconnect the space to its historical fabric and enhance the customer experience through thoughtful, context-aware design.

Outcome

The new fit-out brings together functionality, atmosphere and respect for heritage. From exposed structural elements to reinstated glass highlights, every detail was considered to elevate the retail experience while amplifying the building’s character.

The result is a space that feels both grounded in history and designed for the present. It honours Clarence Street Cyclery’s legacy as a landmark in Australian cycling and its place within one of Sydney’s few surviving Victorian warehouses.

This careful transformation strengthens the connection between place, purpose and people. It reinforces why Clarence Street Cyclery continues to be one of the most enduring names in the industry.
